St. Aidan's Gets 'Messy'
Watch for 2019 Dates for Messy Church
Glitter glue and food coloring, dirt, finger paints, feathers; it was all a part of St. Aidan’s first ever Messy Church gathering, which took place on Nov. 16.
Over 50 individuals came to join in the celebration of fellowship, fun and hospitality.
Packed in a mental suitcase, the program was brought over from England when Dave Labdon and his wife, Elaine made the transition to Winnipeg last September so that Dave could become the new incumbent at St. Aidan’s. Originally, Messy Church was created by a woman in Liverpool; the ministry is making its way around the globe. The informal gathering engages people and helps to build relationships with them outside the usual church context.
“It’s to encourage families to get used to church and hopefully they will come to our main church too,” Elaine Labdon explains.
A number of round tables were dedicated to hosting the materials needed for children and the young at heart to explore their creative sides. Each craft, including the carving of an edible rice krispy square, was designed along the theme of “creation”.
"Since the event kicked off the very beginning of Messy Church, the creation theme was fitting," Elaine said.
Using a 1940 Ford convertible model car as a metaphor, Dave gave a simple message about how people are created in the image of God and have the Bible as the instruction manual to build a good life.
After some music, guests enjoyed a pancake supper and fellowship time.
“It’s Elaine’s brain child,” Dave says of Messy Church. “We are going to have 7 or 8 more events, taking us right up to Easter.”
